The Power of Persistence in Fitness

coach Karen

(Keep going. You’re closer than you think.)

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about persistence — that quiet, steady kind of strength that doesn’t get much attention, but changes everything.

When I was a freshman in nursing school, I met a student who was starting her freshman year for the fourth time.
Year one, she was in a terrible car accident.
Year two, her recovery dragged on.
Year three, she was derailed by something else — I can’t even remember what it was.
And by year four, she was still at it — still showing up, still trying. That’s when I met her.

And here’s the best part: she made it. She did the rest of the program with me, and we graduated together.

One of our professors said something that’s never left me:

“If you want something badly enough, you just keep going. Barriers are opportunities. Failure is feedback.”

That’s persistence in action — and it’s the same mindset that helps people stay consistent with workouts and overcome injuries in fitness.

Persistence in Action: Finding a Way Around the Wall

Just last week, I was talking to Coach Karen. She’s been dealing with a hip injury and was nervous about teaching her Recharge class.
She said, “I don’t know if I can do it right now.”

I told her, “This might actually be a gift — a chance to grow your language of coaching.”

When we train new interns at Dynamic Strength & Conditioning, we sometimes put them in the far corner of the gym with a mic and have them coach us through a warm-up without demonstrating anything. They have to describe the movement, guide the cues, and paint the picture with their words.

That’s a skill. And it only grows through challenge.

A day or two later, Karen came up to me and said, “You know what? That really helped me. I’m looking at it differently now — as an opportunity to get better.”

That’s persistence. That’s the no-quit mindset.

Soon enough, Karen will have a new hip and will be right back out there, blowing us all away with her strength and energy. But what she’s learning right now — the patience, the adaptability, the grit — that’s just as important.

What Persistence Sounds Like in Fitness

“Okay, this didn’t work. What’s next?”
“That door closed. Where’s another one?”
“I can’t do that yet, but I can do this.”

We all hit walls — injuries, setbacks, schedules, life. But the people who make it? They keep finding a way around.

So wherever you are in your fitness journey, remember:
You don’t have to do everything.
You just have to do something.
Keep going, keep adapting, and trust that you’re closer to your finish line than you think.

Persistence always pays off. 💪
